It all started with the July full moon–the “thunder moon,” named for the month’s frequency of thunderstorms. Friends invited us for a “moon river” cruise on their sailboat.

We began early Saturday evening (July 8th), sailing from the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal, through the inlet and into the Delaware Bay. A spectacular sunset–and the festivities were just beginning!

As the evening–and Mother Nature’s glory progressed–we found ourselves tethered to 6 other sailboats, enjoying a floating cocktail party…

….waiting for the “grand finale”……

“Moon River, wider than a mile, I’m crossing you tonight in style…..” Those of you old enough to remember the song (or if you’ve seen the movie, “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,”)…the Thunder Moon was just beginning as it didn’t officially reach full moon “status” until Sunday.  So…off we went Sunday evening for another look!

Delaware Seashore State Park, just before sunset. And the site of the new Big Chill Beach Club!

Good food, great atmosphere, and a 360-degree view–and we were treated to yet another amazing sunset…

and the perfect ending to an Independence Day week.  Next full moon: August 7, 2017.

“Two drifters, off to see the world. There’s such a lot of world to see… We’re after the same rainbow’s end, waitin’ ’round the bend, my huckleberry friend, moon river, and me.”  –Moon River, lyrics by Johnny Mercer, music by Henry Mancini.
